Jaipur, Aug. 17 -- The singing of Vande Mataram during Independence Day celebrations triggered a political slugfest between the BJP and Congress, with Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday targeting Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and demanding an apology. Addressing a gathering in Chittorgarh, Shah referred to a video from the Independence Day celebrations at the Congress headquarters and accused the party leadership of disrespecting Vande Mataram. The BJP alleged that the Congress leadership objected to singing the full version of Vande Mataram.
Accusing the Congress leadership of disrespecting national sentiment, Shah demanded an explanation and an apology.
The Congress, meanwhile, hit back at the BJP by highlighting an incident at the party's Independence Day programme in Jaipur, where the wrong national song was played. The error caused a stir, following which state BJP chief Madan Rathore apologised.
Ex-CM Ashok Gehlot also targeted the BJP and the RSS. "How can people subscribing to the RSS ideology, who did not sing Vande Mataram due to fear of the British, talk about Vande Mataram today?"...
