UPMRC hosts 'Chess on Wheels' to mark International Chess Day
LUCKNOW, July 21 -- The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) turned a moving metro coach into a venue for a rapid chess tournament, to mark International Chess Day. The initiative, titled 'Chess on Wheels', featured a speed chess competition aboard a train travelling from Munshipulia to Hazratganj.
The event later shifted to Hazratganj Metro Station, where an open chess tournament brought together passengers and chess enthusiasts from across the city. Participants across age groups competed in timed matches, showcasing strategy, concentration and quick decision-making.
Organised in collaboration with the Black & White Chess Club (CCBW), the event aimed to popularise the centuries-old board game among a wider audience, particularly young commuters.The top performers were awarded medals.
International Chess Day, observed annually on July 20, celebrates the game's role in promoting critical thinking, creativity and social inclusion.
UPMRC managing director Sushil Kumar said the initiative aimed to encourage young people to take up intellectual sports and provide them with a platform to showcase their talent. He said such events would help foster creativity, improve concentration and promote a healthy competitive spirit among the youth....
