Lucknow, June 16 -- A sustained weekend enforcement drive by Uttar Pradesh Police targeting drink-driving, noise pollution and other traffic violations has uncovered over 76,000 offences across the state, according to an official press release. The statewide campaign was conducted between May 9 and June 14 on Saturdays and Sundays. It was launched on the directions of director general of police Rajeev Krishna to curb accidents and improve road safety. The campaign focused on four key violations: drunk driving, use of modified silencers and pressure horns, vehicles without High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), and underage driving. The traffic directorate under the supervision of ADG (Traffic) spearheaded the campaign. Data-driven enforcement formed the backbone of the drive. Police cited accident analysis from 2023 to 2025 showing a consistent share of crashes linked to alcohol consumption. Officials flagged weekends as particularly vulnerable, noting that intoxicated driving poses serious threats to commuters and pedestrians, especially at night. The campaign involved extensive deployment at 135 toll plazas, where dedicated teams equipped with breath analysers, body-worn cameras, reflective gear and loudhailers checked vehicles lane by lane. A total of 3,645 personnel, including inspectors, sub-inspectors, constables, women police staff and home guards, were deployed. Over the six-week period, police checked more than 10.24 lakh vehicles. Action was taken against 13,431 motorists for drunk driving, 28,477 for noise pollution violations, 33,616 for operating vehicles without HSRP and 930 cases involving minors behind the wheel. Altogether, 76,454 challans were issued, with penalties amounting to Rs.56.91 crore. In a parallel outreach effort, women police personnel conducted "meet and greet" interactions with female passengers and families during checks, offering on-the-spot assistance and reinforcing a citizen-friendly approach to enforcement. Officials reiterated that under the Motor Vehicles Act, driving with blood alcohol levels above the permissible limit attracts stringent penalties, including fines and jail terms. Police urged citizens to follow traffic norms, avoid drink- driving, ensure proper vehicle registration, and prevent minors from driving, stressing that road safety is a shared public responsibility, not just a policing mandate....
