UP's Jiya wins two medals in swimming
India, June 19 -- LUCKNOW Uttar Pradesh basked in sporting pride as Jiya Yadav, 18, produced a standout showing at the 79th Senior National Swimming Championship in Ahmedabad on Thursday, emerging as one of the meet's brightest young backstrokers.
Competing against India's top senior swimmers, Jiya captured two national medals, underscoring both her rapid development and the strengthening pipeline of swimmers from Uttar Pradesh.
Jiya opened her medal haul in the sprint 50m backstroke, where she touched the wall in 00:30.27 to claim a hardfought silver. Later in the day, she demonstrated stamina and tactical nous in the 200m backstroke, navigating the middle laps with disciplined pacing to secure bronze in 02:22.26.
Third seed Tejas Singh displayed clinical baseline control to defeat fifth seed Ankur Alok of Bihar 6-1, 6-3, moving into the final with commanding groundstrokes and few unforced errors in the AITA Under-14 Championship, at the Vijayant Khand Stadium.
In the upset of the day, unseeded Haris Khan rallied from a set down to overpower top seed Krishna Singh 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, showcasing resilience, improved serve placement and timely aggression to clinch the decider.
In the girls' semis top-seed Anaya Sen outplayed Siya Singh 6-1, 6-1 with crisp strokes and tactical variety. Second seed Saundarya Jaiswal defeated third seed Aashi Kiran 6-1, 6-0....
