UP Police attach Rs 1.5 cr property linked to Azamgarh gangster
LUCKNOW, May 12 -- In a crackdown on organised crime in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh Police on Sunday attached a property worth around Rs 1.5 crore belonging to alleged jailed gangster Dhruv Kumar Singh alias Kuntu Singh, a history-sheeter facing 78 criminal cases, officials said on Monday.
The action was taken under Section 14(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, in connection with cases registered at Jiyanpur and Kotwali police stations in Azamgarh district.
Police said Dhruv Singh is currently lodged in Kasganj jail after being shifted there in February 2021. He is serving a life sentence in the July 2013 murder case of former MLA Sarvesh Singh alias Seepu and was earlier lodged in Varanasi and Azamgarh jails in multiple cases.
The attached property, known locally as "Badi Haveli", is located in Chhapra Sultanpur village under Jiyanpur police station limits. Officials alleged the haveli was reconstructed using proceeds from organised criminal activities including murder, extortion, robbery and kidnapping.
Authorities said the premises allegedly functioned as an operational hub for gang activities such as meetings, planning and distribution of extortion money. Dhruv Singh is listed as a state mafia figure and leads gang IR-36, and is registered as history-sheeter number 138A at Jiyanpur police station.
The Public Works Department (PWD) assessed the cost of reconstruction, while a legal opinion from the Joint Director Prosecution, Azamgarh, reportedly found no legitimate source of income linked to the property.
Following this, the property was attached and the Sagri tehsildar was appointed administrator. Further legal proceedings have been initiated by police and revenue officials.
Police records show cases against Dhruv Singh date back to 1992, including charges of murder, attempt to murder, dacoity, extortion, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, Arms Act violations and Gangster Act offences across Azamgarh, Mau, Jaunpur and Lucknow.
The action was carried out under the supervision of Azamgarh SSP Dr Anil Kumar in the presence of ASP Rural Chirag Jain and CO City Shubham Todi....
