UP fail to qualify for Mankad Trophy K-O once again
LUCKNOW, Oct. 18 -- For the second successive time, former champions Uttar Pradesh failed to make it to the knockout of the Under-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy, losing to lowly Assam by 100 runs in their last Elite Group E encounter, at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday.
Uttar Pradesh finished with eight points in five matches as they could win only against Delhi by four wickets and against Maharashtra by 84 runs. And before losing to Assam on Friday, Uttar Pradesh lost to Punjab by 16 runs and Rajasthan by nine wickets. Punjab with 20 points and Rajasthan with 16 points qualified for the knockout from the group.
For sure, it was a poor bowling as well as a pathetic batting by Uttar Pradesh boys against Assam, who also finished as the last run on the ladder in points table, on Friday as first they allowed rivals to post a challenging 278/8 at 5.56 after being sent to field first, and then they had a complete batting failure, getting out for 178.
Yshu Pradhan (37, 38b, 5x4), Bhavi Sharma (27, 26b, 2x4, 1x6) and skipper Bhavy Goyal (25, 54b, 2x4) tried their best to adorn UP's innings, but in vain as after losing opener Anmol Noushran in the third over, Uttar Pradesh kept losing wickets on regular intervals before being bundled out in 38.3 overs.
Earlier, Assam batters made full use of a poor bowling attack of Uttar Pradesh as Vikas Kumar Yadav struck 126-ball 100 with the help of 11 boundaries and a six. Even after losing an early wicket of Tushar Rudra Borah (12), Assam batters didn't lose patience and kept stroking the ball nicely all around the ground.
It was also an end of the road for Uttar Pradesh in the Senior Women's T20 Trophy as they finished at the fifth place in Elite Group A after losing to Vidarbha by seven wickets in their last league encounter, at the IS Bindra Cricket Stadium at Mohali on Friday....
