UP energy minister bars lumpsum charges for smart meters
LUCKNOW, Oct. 18 -- Uttar Pradesh energy minister AK Sharma has directed that consumers should not be charged a lump sum amount for smart meters, saying it goes against the government's policy and intention. He said meter costs must be recovered through long-term, easy instalments to avoid burdening consumers. Taking note of reports that some distribution companies are collecting one-time charges, Sharma said the government's aim was to modernise the power sector while ensuring consumer convenience, not adding financial stress. He ordered the energy department and Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) officials to strictly follow this policy and said formal orders would be issued soon. So far, over 40 lakh smart meters have been installed across the state under the national drive to make power distribution transparent, efficient, and consumer-friendly. Sharma said smart meters gave users real-time consumption data, eliminating billing errors and corruption.
He appealed to consumers to support the Smart Meter Scheme and report any irregularities to their local power office or helpline, asserting that the initiative would make UP's electricity system more reliable, digital, and accountable....
