LUCKNOW, June 8 -- The Uttar Pradesh Congress will launch a statewide awareness and signature campaign on Monday (June 8) against the proposed Rs.72,000-crore Great Nicobar mega infrastructure project. The signature and online petition campaign, titled #GreenOverGreed, seeks to oppose the project, which the party claims threatens pristine rainforests, tribal communities and coral reefs. "The project could lead to the felling of nearly 1.5 crore trees," claimed UP Congress president Ajay Rai in a statement. Rai will launch the campaign in Uttar Pradesh. "The Modi government must stop selling off the nation's 'natural treasure' for the benefit of its industrialist friends. The government is handing over a pristine forest on Great Nicobar Island-four times the size of New Delhi (161 sq km)-to the real estate projects of its industrialist friends," he alleged, claiming that his party would not allow it....
