Rudrapur, July 10 -- Uttarakhand Open University (UOU), Haldwani has set up a special study centre for inmates in Sitarganj jail of US Nagar, officials said on Thursday, adding that those inmates who are wishing to enhance their educational and professional qualifications will be benefitted by the centre. "We have set up a study centre for our inmates where they will be provided educational and professional courses with the cooperation of UOU. Around 50 inmates have shown interest and enrolled for the course," said Anurag Malik, senior superintendent, central jail in Sitarganj. The central jail administration has started a new kind of initiative of setting up a special study centre with cooperation of UOU for the inmates. Its aim is to provide educational and professional courses to inmates in jail premises so that after release from jail, they can be rehabilitated and join the society. "The education is the fundamental right of the citizens but it was a challenge for us to provide educational and professional courses to the inmates. It happened due to a positive approach by the UOU. Our aim is to make inmates through courses so that after release or on pay-roll inmates can earn livelihood and lead a secured life," said Malik.
