LUCKNOW, Sept. 18 -- Unseeded player Mayand Tiwari from West Bengal continued his impressive run at the 3rd KL Garg All India Men's Prize Money Tennis Tournament on Thursday, defeating fifth-seeded Sunil Kumar in the semi-finals to secure a spot in the final. He will now face second-seeded Suraj from Karnataka in the title clash on Friday at the SDS Tennis Academy here. In the first singles semi-final Tiwari pulled off a stunning upset by defeating fifth-seeded Sunil Kumar of Haryana in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Tiwari maintained relentless pressure on Sunil with aggressive baseline play right from the start, refusing to let his higher-ranked opponent find any rhythm. His consistent depth and well-placed winners allowed him to clinch both sets comfortably in just over an hour of play. This victory caps a remarkable tournament run for the unseeded West Bengal player. Tiwari had already caused waves earlier in the competition by reaching the last four through a quarterfinal victory over seventh-seeded Aditya Kumar from Punjab. Even more impressively, he had kicked off his campaign in the first round with a major upset, defeating third-seeded Ayush Sharma to announce his arrival as a dark horse contender. In the second singles semi-final, second-seeded Suraj from Karnataka demonstrated why he was among the favorites, defeating Ricky Chaudhary of Delhi 6-4, 6-2 to enter the final. While the first set saw a closely contested battle with both players holding serve comfortably, Suraj gained the upper hand by performing better at crucial moments, breaking Chaudhary's serve at 4-4 before serving out the set. The lineup for the doubles final was also finalized on Thursday, with both semifinal matches going the distance and being decided by super tie-breaks. The pair of Sagar from Delhi and Fardin from West Bengal will face the duo of Kanishk from Gujarat and Ricky from Delhi in what promises to be an exciting final. In the first doubles semi-final, Sagar and Fardin defeated Aditya Mor of Haryana and Udit Gogoi of Assam 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in a match that showcased excellent teamwork and clutch play. Sagar and Fardin won the first set convincingly, but Aditya and Udit bounced back strongly in the second set to force a deciding super tie-break. In the super tie-break, Sagar and Fardin held their nerve to secure a 10-7 victory and book their place in the final. In the second doubles semi-final, Gujarat's Kanishk and Delhi's Ricky advanced to the final by defeating Haryana's Jatin Nain and Gujarat's Megh Bhargav with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 10-3. In this match too, both pairs won one set each, setting up a decisive super tie-breaker. Kanishk and Ricky displayed superior coordination and communication to score consecutive points early and clinch the match comfortably 10-3. The winners at the 1st Lucknow Women's Cricket League would be richer by Rs 2 lakh, whereas the runners-up team would get Rs 1.5 lakh. The league matches will be played from September 23, at the Sage Cricket Ground, whereas the semi-finals and final are slated to be played at the KD Singh 'Babu' stadium.
