Uniform dress code implemented for Ram temple priests
Ayodhya, Aug. 17 -- A uniform dress code has been implemented for priests at the Ram temple in Ayodhya from Saturday, two members of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra's religious committee said here on Sunday. "The attire of the priests performing worship of Ram Lalla will be in accordance with the Ramanand tradition," said Mithilesh Nandini Sharan, a committee member.
The priests will wear a light yellow (pitambar) 'dhoti' (a long unstitched cloth) below and an 'uttariya' (traditional, unstitched long scarf or upper-body wrap from ancient India) garment above, he added. This garment will be made of silk.
"Arrangements regarding hair and beard have also been decided. The priests will either follow the tradition of Panchkesh or remain completely hairless. There will be no arrangement for shaving the beard and keeping only the hair. In accordance with the Ramanand tradition, wearing tilak for the priests will also be ensured," Sharan said. In traditional Hindu ritual texts, Panchkesh refers to traditions associated with hair.
Mahant Rajkumar Das, another religious committee member, said that all priests engaged in the regular service of Ram Lalla will now be seen in a uniform dress code.
Keeping in mind the "sanctity and purity of silk garment," it has been included in the attire of priests, he added.
"The members of the religious committee believe that a uniform attire will make discipline, uniformity, and religious dignity in the service arrangements of Ram Lalla even more clearly visible. Under the new arrangement, priests of the Ram Mandir will now be seen in similar dress," Rajkumar Das said....
