Under-construction water tank collapses into river
Lucknow, Sept. 9 -- An under-construction overhead water tank, being built under the Jal Jeevan Mission, collapsed into River Kiccha in Beermanar village located in Shergarh block of Bareilly district on Tuesday.
The entire structure, built at an estimated cost of around Rs 4 crore, sank completely into the river within a span of few seconds due to rapid erosion of the embankment by the river triggered by heavy rainfall.
The UP Jal Nigam officers said, when the project's site was selected for the construction of the overhead water tank, Kiccha flowed roughly 500 metres away from the spot. However, severe soil erosion over the last 2 to 3 years brought the river within 100 metres of the structure.
On Monday, the swift current of the river eroded the boundary wall of the area in which the overhead water tank was constructed. The surge in the water level triggered the collapse of the water tank on Tuesday.
A Jal Nigam officer said, pipeline laying works and installation fo the taps for the supply of the water to the households was nearly complete. The tap connections had been provided to about 70% of the village's households. The collapse of the water tank has indefinitely delayed the community's access to the piped drinking water, he said.htc...
