PRAYAGRAJ, May 28 -- Two youths were tied to a tree and beaten by villagers after they were allegedly caught entering a house in Latifpur village under the Sangramgarh police station area of Pratapgarh late on Tuesday night. A third youth reportedly escaped after opening fire, police said. According to police, the incident took place around 12:30 am when Alok Kumar, a resident of Kasba Latifpur village, woke up and noticed three youths entering the premises after climbing over the boundary wall. Suspecting theft, he raised an alarm, following which villagers gathered and chased the trio. During the chase, one of the youths allegedly opened fire and escaped, while the other two were caught by villagers. Police said the detained youths are residents of a village in the Manikpur area. Villagers allegedly tied the two youths to a tree and assaulted them before informing the UP-112 police helpline. A police team later reached the spot and took both youths into custody. A video allegedly showing the youths tied to a tree and being beaten has surfaced on social media. However, police said the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified. Police are questioning the two youths and conducting raids to trace the third accused. Station house officer Manoj Kumar Tomar said the matter appeared linked to a love affair that had reportedly been ongoing for the past two years. "The youths had allegedly come to meet a girl, after which villagers caught and assaulted them. The matter is being investigated and further action will be taken accordingly," he said....
