Varanasi, April 18 -- Two policemen, including an assistant commissioner of police (ACP), were injured after stone-pelting broke out over a flag dispute in Nehia village under Cholapur police station limits on Friday. The injured officers include ACP Sarnath Vidush Saxena, who suffered a head injury. He was taken to hospital for treatment and is stated to be out of danger. A sub-inspector was also injured and is out of danger. Police said that on April 14, Ambedkar Jayanti, some people had hoisted an Ambedkar flag at the entrance gate leading to Bhairav Batuk Dham temple in the village. It was later allegedly torn down and burnt by miscreants. Following the incident, some residents staged a protest and blocked the road on Thursday. Members of another organisation also reached the spot, leading to tension between the two groups. However, on Friday, the two sides again came face to face over the issue. When a police team led by ACP Saxena reached the village and tried to calm the crowd, some people allegedly began pelting stones, injuring two policemen. Deputy commissioner of police (Varuna Zone) Pramod Kumar later reached the spot with a heavy police force and restored order. Police detained seven people and registered an FIR.
