Two girls die in lightning strike in Sonbhadra, aid provided to families
Varanasi, June 4 -- Two girls were killed after being struck by lightning while taking shelter under a mango tree during rain in Sonbhadra district on Tuesday, officials said.
The incident occurred in Naugawanandlal village under the Ghorawal police station area.
The victims were identified as Anshika ,10, daughter of Ramashankar of Naugawanandlal village, and Anchal ,14, daughter of Vinod of Basdeva village. Anshika was spending her summer holidays at her maternal aunt's house.
According to officials, the girls had gone to a field when the weather suddenly changed and it began to rain.
They took shelter under a nearby mango tree, but a lightning strike near the tree left both of them critically injured.
The girls were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Ghorawal, where doctors declared them dead. Police later took custody of the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination.
District magistrate Charchit Gaur said the administration completed the required formalities and transferred Rs.4 lakh each as relief assistance to the families of the two victims.
He urged residents to avoid venturing out during storms and heavy rain and advised them to stay away from trees, electric poles and open areas during adverse weather conditions....
