Two cyber fraudsters held in Bihar for duping women
VARANASI, June 1 -- Two cyber fraudsters who allegedly cheated women by posing as customs officers after contacting them through matrimonial websites were arrested from Bihar's East Champaran district, police said on Sunday.
Deputy commissioner of police (Crime) Neetu Kadyan said the accused trapped women through fake profiles on matrimonial websites and extorted money by claiming that expensive parcels had been sent from abroad.
The case came to light after a Varanasi resident, identified as Poonam (name changed), lodged a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station on March 13. She alleged that fraudsters befriended her through a matrimonial website, claimed to have sent a gift parcel from abroad and later demanded money while impersonating customs officials.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered under Section 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 66D of the Information Technology Act.
Assistant commissioner of police (Cyber Crime) Vidush Saxena said a police team arrested Vijay Kumar, 28, and Rohit Ranjan, 19, both residents of East Champaran, Bihar, on May 31. Rohit is currently pursuing a BTech degree....
