Two cops booked, SO suspended after Ballia man dies
VARANASI, July 14 -- Two police personnel and four others have been booked, while the station officer of Revati police station has been suspended, following the death of a 55-year-old man whose family alleged he was assaulted in police custody in Ballia district.
Kamji Gond, a resident of Gaighat Lala Tola in Revati, died at the BHU Trauma Centre on Saturday after being hospitalised with injuries. His family alleged that sub-inspector Sachin Saroj and constable Ankit Singh detained and beat him on July 8 to pressure his son, Vishal, to appear before police after a scuffle over a chicken purchase.
The family claimed Gond was later handed over to former village head Ashutosh Shankar Singh and his driver, Manish Yadav, and was found unconscious near his home that same evening. His condition worsened despite treatment at local hospitals.
On Sunday, relatives staged a road blockade demanding action. Ballia SP Omveer Singh suspended the two policemen and transferred station officer Rajkeshar Singh to the police lines.
On the directions of Azamgarh Range DIG Sunil Kumar Singh, police registered a case against the two policemen, former village head Ashutosh Shankar Singh, Manish Yadav, Suraj Kannaujia and another accused under relevant sections of the BNS. Circle officer Manjari Rao has been asked to conduct an impartial probe.
The post-mortem did not ascertain the cause of death, and viscera have been preserved, police said....
