VARANASI, Aug. 9 -- A team of dental surgeons at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Unit of IMS-BHU on Saturday successfully removed a large tumour from the lower jaw of a 35-year-old man and reconstructed it using bone from his right leg. The patient had been suffering from ameloblastoma, a jaw tumour, for around seven years. The condition caused severe facial swelling and asymmetry, leaving him socially uncomfortable and anxious. He had sought treatment at several places before being referred to OMFS, BHU. Led by Prof Akhilesh Kumar Singh, the team removed the tumour-affected portion of the mandible during an eight-hour surgery at the OMFS operation theatre of the Trauma Centre. The missing portion was reconstructed using the patient's fibula bone. Using microvascular surgical techniques, blood vessels supplying the fibula were connected to blood vessels in the neck to restore blood circulation to the reconstructed jaw. The procedure, known as microvascular free fibula flap reconstruction, restored the patient's facial symmetry and contour to near normal. The patient had no significant weakness in his leg and was able to walk normally and resume routine activities after surgery. The surgical team included Prof Naresh Kumar Sharma, Dr Shweta, Dr Ashutosh Arya, Dr Anshu and Dr Poonam Yadav, under Prof Singh.
