Tripti, Babita shine with bat, put UP on verge of qualification
LUCKNOW, March 10 -- Openers Tripti Singh and Babita Yadav smacked unbeaten half centuries as favourites Uttar Pradesh crushed Kerala by 10 wickets to keep their hopes alive for a knockout berth in the Women's Under-23 One Day Trophy, at the CDeccan Gymkhana Cricket Ground in Pune on Monday.
With a convincing win on Monday, Archana Devi-led Uttar Pradesh stayed at second position in Elite Group D with 12 points in four matches. Uttarakhand with 16 points in four matches lead the table.
Now, Uttar Pradesh play their last league match against Gujarat (4 pts) on Wednesday.
On Monday both Singh and Yadav showed their might in style against Kerala bowlers. Whereas Singh struck 84-ball 70 with the help of 10 boundaries and a six, Yadav hit 59 in 72 balls with the help of nine hits to the fence as Uttar Pradesh romped home in 26 overs while chasing 141.
Earlier, bowlers did well for Uttar Pradesh, skittling out Kerala for 140 in 46.4 overs while fielding first after winning the toss. Bhumpi Singh took 3/19, whereas Sonam Yadav (2/17) and Sandhya Chhetri (2/24) shared four wickets between them. Archana Devi and Bharti Singh bagged a wicket each.
In fact, Kerala batters never got the going easy and kept losing wickets on regular intervals after losing captain-keeper Vaishna MP (4) within the powerplay. Kerala were reduced to 70/6 in the 26.1 overs, but a 51-run seventh wicket Manasvi (18, 34b, 2x4) and Aleena MP (33, 66b, 5x4) helped the side cross the 100-run mark. Opener Divya Gireesh (23, 38b, 4x4) was the other main run getter....
