PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 7 -- Police on Thursday claimed to have cracked the sensational triple murder of two women and a man, all of whom were hearing and speech impaired, following the arrest of the primary suspect after an encounter in the Airport police station area. The accused, who is also hearing and speech impaired, was arrested by a joint team of the Shahganj police, Airport police and the Special Operations Group (City) near the Bhagwatpur railway underpass in the early hours of Thursday. According to police, he opened fire while attempting to flee after being signalled to stop. In retaliatory firing by the police, he sustained bullet injuries to both legs and was admitted to SRN Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. The police interrogated the accused With the assistance of a special teacher proficient in sign language. According to police, the accused identified himself as Akash Kumat, 38, a resident of Jhuggi-Jhopri area in Aligarh district. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to committing the murders. The accused suspected his wife of having an illicit relationship with the deceased man. Police said the accused told investigators that he had been mentally disturbed due to the suspected affair and committed the crime out of resentment and anger. The accused further told police that on the night of the incident, he visited the rented room where all four of them consumed mutton and liquor together. He then asked his wife to accompany him, but she refused. Enraged, he allegedly slammed her head against the wall and later attacked all three victims one by one with a gas cylinder, causing their deaths, before fleeing the spot, police said. The police team recovered an illegal .315-bore country-made pistol, two live cartridges, two spent cartridges and four mobile phones from his possession. Based on the recovery, police have invoked Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act in addition to the murder charges, Gupta said. The case pertains to the recovery of the bodies of two women and a man, all estimated to be between 40 and 45 years of age, from a rented room in Garhi Kala near Leader Road under the Shahganj police station limits on August 4. During the investigation, police found that all three victims earned their livelihood by collecting recyclable waste. Their identities, however, are yet to be formally established by police. Following the incident, an FIR (Case No. 25/2026) was registered on the complaint of Shyamlal, a scrap dealer from Shahganj, and multiple police teams were constituted to investigate the killings.
