Jaipur, Sept. 8 -- The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant relief to a man serving a life sentence in a case linked to the 2008 Jaipur serial bomb blasts. The bench of justices MM Sundresh and Prasanna V Varale was hearing the convict, Mohammad Sarvar Azmi's appeal against his conviction by the state high court. Additional Advocate General Shiv Mangal Sharma said the bench noted that the case, which involved a national security threat, could not be treated like an ordinary bail matter. Sharma said Azmi cited his acquittals in eight other cases linked to the blasts. He stated that all nine bombs were part of one single conspiracy, so if he was found "not guilty" in those eight cases, he should not be jailed in this one. He also argued that police took 12 years to arrest him and file charges in this case, which he called unfair and suspicious. The appeal also argued the key witness against him was unreliable, and that he had already spent over 15 years in jail. Sharma argued that the ninth case was completely different from the other eight, involved a separate location, a separate live bomb, and separate evidence, especially the identification of Azmi by a shopkeeper who sold him the bicycle used to carry the bomb. The state said this evidence was never rejected by the high court in the earlier cases and the state's appeals against the eight earlier acquittals are still pending in the Supreme Court. On the delay, the state said a late arrest does not automatically mean the case is fake, and that courts should not re-examine evidence in detail just to decide on bail. After hearing both sides, the court refused to release Azmi. His conviction and life sentence will stand while his appeal is heard. On May 13, 2008, eight bombs planted at different places in Jaipur exploded, killing 70 people. A ninth bomb was found and defused. In 2025, a trial court sentenced Azmi to life imprisonment for his role in planting the bomb.
