Tiger found dead with severed limbs in Shyampur range; 1 held
Haridwar, May 20 -- A 31-year-old man, identified as Alam, belonging to the Van Gujjar community, has been arrested in connection with the alleged poisoning, killing and mutilation of a tiger whose four legs were chopped off in the Shyampur range (under the Haridwar forest division), a buffer zone of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, forest officials aware of the matter said on Tuesday.
The carcass of the two-year-old male tiger was spotted on Monday evening during a routine patrol and search operation in compartment number 9 of the Sajjanpur beat in the Shyampur range, they said.
Divulging details, divisional forest officer (Haridwar) Swapnil Anirudh said the tiger was found with all four legs severed. "The accused, Alam, a resident of Gujjar Dera in the Shyampur compartment, was arrested from the spot, while his accomplice, Amir Hamza, managed to flee," he said.
He added the tiger likely belonged to Rajaji Tiger Reserve but its precise origin would be clear upon further investigation. A case was registered under Section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act over the matter, he said.
"As the forest personnel reached the site, both accused were found trying to extract the tiger's teeth and skin. By then, they had already cut off all four legs of the two-year-old male tiger. A carcass of a buffalo was also found nearby. The tiger's postmortem is being conducted as per the norms of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and legal action is being taken against the accused. Vigil and search operations have been intensified in and around the forest area," Yadav added.
Officials said poison was allegedly sprayed on the carcass of the buffalo found at the site. The buffalo is believed to have been killed earlier by the tiger, which likely strayed into the forest area from nearby Gujjar settlements....
