PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 1 -- Five minor girls who had gone to the Karnawati river in Manda area of Prayagraj's Trans-Yamuna region to immerse puja material as part of the Kajri festival were swept away by a strong current while bathing on Sunday morning. Three of the girls were rescued by local residents, while two remained missing, police said. The incident took place around 9 am in front of Rampur Siria village under Mahuwari Kala gram panchayat. The girls, residents of a locality in Surwandalapur village, had gone to the river for the festival ritual. According to police and local residents, a group of girls, including 15-year-old Ankita Tiwari, daughter of Rajesh Tiwari, and 12-year-old Shubhi Mishra, daughter of Shailendra Mishra, were swept away by the strong current. Farmers managed to pull out three girls 13-year-old Rabi alias Arya Mishra, 11-year-old Prapti Tiwari,and nine-year-old Gullu. Manda station house officer (SHO) Kuldeep Sharma and a fire brigade team reached the spot after being alerted.
