Three drown while bathing in Son
VARANASI, June 25 -- Three people, including two teenagers, drowned while bathing in the Son river near Mitapur Gram Panchayat under the Chopan police station area on Wednesday, police said.
A police officer said that according to family members, Veerbhadra alias Bolbam 16, Sandeep 18, and Deepak 9, drifted into deep waters while bathing in the river and drowned.
Additional superintendent of police, Anil Kumar inspected the spot and said, "Soon after the incident local divers were pressed into service to locate the bodies. But they could not be traced. The SDRF team has been called to search for the bodies. In the meantime, a continuous search operation is underway in the river, with local divers assisting in the search for the three people."
Asked about the allegation that family members were saying that Sandeep, 18, fell in the river during a stampede-like situation due to force used by the police to control the crowd that gathered after the two persons drowned, the ASP said, "This is baseless and a false claim. Police didn't use any sort of force."
The ASP said that signages were installed with a message, warning the people about the deep water stretches at the rivers and various ponds in the district recently to check incidents of death due to drowning....
