Lucknow, Sept. 21 -- A school bus carrying children caught fire in Lucknow district's Itaunja on Saturday, bringing into focus safety lapses that had already been found in school transport fleets during a three-day enforcement drive earlier this week. The September 16-18 inspections of 145 vehicles operated by several prominent city schools found 26 vehicles not meeting the set norms, including expired fitness, insurance and pollution certificates, as well as faulty safety equipment. The Saturday incident involved a school bus carrying 25 children in Itaunja. The children were evacuated after the vehicle caught fire; one child sustained burn injuries. A subsequent inspection of the school's fleet found several buses unfit, according to transport officials. The incident occurred a day after the Regional Transport Office (RTO) concluded its three-day inspection drive, conducted under the ongoing 'Mission Safe' campaign. The inspections were not linked to Saturday's fire and had been planned earlier as part of routine enforcement of school transport safety norms. RTO (Enforcement) Prabhat Pandey said school managements had been directed to ensure that all vehicles ferrying students had valid fitness certificates, permits, insurance and other mandatory documents. They have also been asked to ensure female attendants on school vehicles, police verification of drivers and regular meetings of school transport safety committees. Deputy Transport Commissioner, Lucknow Region, Radhey Shyam said safety standards for school vehicles would have to be followed strictly and negligence would not be accepted.
