Haldwani, July 31 -- In an effort to solve the mystery surrounding a series of stone-pelting incidents for nearly 20 days in Nainital, the police have decided to install thermal CCTV cameras and high-mast LED lights and clear dense bushes in the affected localities to strengthen surveillance, officials said on Thursday. The decision was taken by SP (Crime) Dr Jagdish Chand after he inspected the affected areas following another stone-pelting incident on Wednesday. He directed the police team to implement the proposed measures at the earliest, police said. According to officials, mysterious stone-pelting incidents have been reported since the night of July 10 and 11 in areas such as Zila Panchayat Road, Mevilla Compound, Zila Panchayat Complex, Cement House and Jivji Cottage. Large stones have repeatedly landed on the roofs of houses, injuring at least four people so far and triggering panic among residents, they said. Local residents alleged that whenever they rushed outside after hearing stones hit their rooftops, they failed to find anyone in the vicinity. The matter was earlier brought to the notice of commissioner Deepak Rawat, who had directed the police to investigate the incidents and take appropriate action. Following Wednesday night's incident, residents once again alerted the police, prompting a team led by Dr Chand to visit the locality and conduct a detailed inspection.
