GORAKHPUR, Aug. 5 -- Venom, the trained sniffer dog who guarded the Gorakhnath Temple for more than eight years, died of cancer on Tuesday, police said. His death left police personnel and the temple security team in mourning, and he was given a farewell later in the day. Venom was brought to Gorakhpur from Madhya Pradesh around eight years ago and was deployed with the Gorakhnath Temple security unit as a sub-inspector-rank sniffer dog. During his service, he played a key role in maintaining security and assisted police during major religious events and other important occasions. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dr Kaustubh carried Venom's body on his shoulder during the funeral procession, reflecting the respect and affection the police department had for the loyal canine.
