GORAKHPUR, July 5 -- Veteran Ram Janmabhoomi campaigner, businessman and senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Balkrishna Sarraf died in Gorakhpur on Saturday after a prolonged age-related illness. He was 97, family members said. A noted jeweller, Sarraf was closely associated with Mahant Avaidyanath and held key positions in several religious and social organisations. He played an active role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in eastern Uttar Pradesh and served as the divisional president of the VHP. During the Ram temple agitation, he coordinated arrangements for kar sevaks. His death drew condolences from religious, political and business circles. Paying tribute, Gorakhpur Chamber of Commerce office-bearer Sanjay Singhania said, "He dedicated his entire life to social service, religious activities and public welfare. His contribution to the Ram temple movement and society will always be remembered." Political leaders, members of the business community and representatives of various social organisations also expressed grief, describing Sarraf as a respected and humble personality who remained committed to public service throughout his life. His last rites are expected to be performed in Gorakhpur on Sunday....
