Teen girl abducted, murdered; youth held
PRAYAGRAJ, June 18 -- A 14-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and murdered by a youth from her village in Kaushambi district on Tuesday evening, with police claiming that the crime stemmed from a strained romantic relationship.
The victim's body was discovered late Tuesday night, police said.
The victim, a resident of Purab Sharira village under the Paschim Sharira police station area, had gone to a nearby field with her friends to harvest peppermint during the day. According to police, she was allegedly abducted while returning home in the evening by Rahul Kumar Saroj, a resident of the same village.
When the girl's friends informed her family about the incident, they immediately launched a search but failed to locate her.
The family subsequently alerted the UP-112 emergency response service. Acting on the information, station house officer BN Pandey and his team reached the village and initiated an investigation.
During the probe, police detained the accused for questioning. Rahul allegedly confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation and led investigators to an agricultural field about 1.5 km from the village, where the girl's body was recovered around 10 pm.
According to police, the accused admitted to strangling the teenager with her dupatta. During questioning, he allegedly told investigators that he had been in a relationship with the girl, but she had recently started interacting with another person. Enraged over the development, he allegedly killed her.
The body was sent for postmortem examination. A case has been registered against the accused on the complaint lodged by the victim's brother.
Kaushambi superintendent of police Satyanarayan Prajapat said that after receiving information about the girl's disappearance, police reached the village and began questioning family members. During the inquiry, officers learnt that the suspect had not fled and was moving around in the vicinity of the police station area.
"Acting swiftly, police took the accused into custody. During preliminary interrogation, he confessed to the crime and led the police team to the spot where the body had been hidden in a field," the SP said.
Police said further evidence is being collected and the accused will be produced before a court after detailed questioning.
The deceased was the youngest among eight siblings-three brothers and five sisters. Four of her elder sisters are married. Family members said they had also begun looking for a suitable match for her....
