PRAYAGRAJ, Feb. 11 -- A 17-year-old boy drowned while bathing in the Sai River in the Dilippur area of Pratapgarh on Tuesday afternoon. According to police, Sadaan, a resident of Sarkhelpur village, had gone to bathe at Natka Veerbaba Ghat near Chaupai village along with his elder brother Sohail and two friends. While bathing, he accidentally ventured into deep water and began to drown. Sohail raised an alarm, following which nearby villagers rushed to the spot. Around a dozen villagers entered the river and began searching for the teenager. Nearly an hour later, his body was recovered about 500 metres downstream. He was immediately taken to the medical college, where doctors declared him dead.SHO of Dilippur police station Balram Singh confirmed that the teenager died after slipping into deep water while bathing. The body has been sent for postmortem. A case of extortion has come to light involving the daughter of a retired police inspector. It is alleged that four unidentified youths threatened the victim, demanding Rs.2 lakh in extortion money, and told her to forget about the land she had purchased. They also threatened her life if she did not pay the amount. The accused also snatched Rs.5,000 from her purse. The incident occurred in the Kareli area of the city on Monday evening. The Kareli police have registered an FIR against the unidentified youths. According to the complaint filed by Daraksha Parveen, a resident of Kabhati locality under the Naini police station area of Prayagraj, she had purchased a plot from one Sana Amreen in the Enuddinpur area on November 20, 2025, and got the same registered in her name. She alleged that on February 9, she went to have the plot cleaned. Meanwhile, four unidentified youths arrived on two bikes and started threatening her. The accused demanded Rs.2 lakh in extortion money. They warned her that if she did not pay the money, she should forget about the plot she had purchased or face being killed.SHO of Kareli police station, Ashish Singh, said that a case has been registered based on the complaint and the matter is being investigated....
