Survivor out of ICU, faces long road to recovery
LUCKNOW, July 8 -- Nearly two weeks after the Aliganj commercial building fire that killed 15 people, the lone critically injured survivor has been shifted out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at King George's Medical University (KGMU) Trauma Centre after showing improvement, doctors said.
Jayant Gupta, a 3D character artist, has been transferred to the department of neurosurgery after his condition improved. He suffered multiple spinal and back injuries after jumping from the commercial building to escape the June 22 blaze.
Gupta was among seven people injured in the fire, one of Lucknow's deadliest workplace blazes in recent years. The incident claimed 15 lives after flames engulfed a private company operating from the building's second floor.
Doctors initially treated Gupta in the Trauma ICU with specialists from Trauma Surgery and Neurosurgery, stabilizing his condition under continuous monitoring before shifting him for further treatment.
"Jayant Gupta is recovering and has been shifted out of the Trauma ICU to the neurosurgery department. However, considering the nature and severity of his injuries, it will take time for him to recover completely. A dedicated team of doctors has been constituted by the university authorities to ensure he receives the best possible treatment and continuous medical care," said Prof Premraj Singh, chief medical superintendent, KGMU Trauma Centre.
Doctors said Gupta will require prolonged treatment, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, adding that the coming weeks will be crucial for his recovery....
