Haridwar, July 24 -- A series of mysterious stone-pelting incidents reported from several residential localities in Nainital over the past two weeks has triggered fear among residents, with two civilians and two police personnel sustaining injuries in separate incidents, police said on Thursday. Taking note of the incidents, Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat has directed Nainital police to identify the unidentified persons allegedly involved in the stone-pelting and take strict legal action against them. He has also instructed the police to analyse CCTV footage and use mobile surveillance to trace the accused. Officials said repeated incidents were reported between 8 pm and 11 pm from several localities, with residents alleging that the attackers were taking advantage of darkness and the proximity of forest areas to carry out the stone-pelting and escape before they could be identified. According to residents, the incidents have been taking place since July 8 in areas including Zila Panchayat Road, Mevilla Compound, Zila Panchayat Complex, Cement House and Jiwaji Cottage. Residents said they rush out of their houses after hearing sound of heavy stones crashing onto tin roofs and other parts of their buildings. htc...
