PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 21 -- The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) arrested a wanted gangster carrying a Rs.50,000 reward from New Delhi on Wednesday in connection with a Gangsters Act case registered in Prayagraj, officials said on Thursday. The accused, Chaila Babu Saroj, a resident of Bairaj Sringverpur village under Nawabganj police station, was arrested around 6:40 pm in Netaji Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, said Shailesh Pratap Singh, deputy superintendent of police (DySP) of the STF's Prayagraj unit. Saroj was wanted in FIR No. 175/2026 registered at Nawabganj police station under Sections 2/3 of the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. A Rs.50,000 reward had been announced for information leading to his arrest. The STF team tracking wanted accused carrying rewards learnt that Saroj was hiding in New Delhi. The operation was led by sub-inspector Dharmendra Singh, along with head constables Sunil Kumar, Rajesh Kumar, Pankaj Singh and Santosh Kumar, and driver Akhand Pratap Pandey. During interrogation, Saroj allegedly claimed he headed an organised gang involved in several theft and loot incidents in 2025, the DySP said. Several cases are registered against him at police stations in Prayagraj, and he had also been jailed previously. STF officials said cases against Saroj have been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Arms Act and other penal provisions at Sarai Inayat, Soraon, Nawabganj, Baharia and Manda police stations in Prayagraj, besides cases in Pratapgarh.
