State starts probe for geothermal power plant site at Tapovan
Dehradun, July 20 -- Uttarakhand has begun scientific exploration for a proposed geothermal power project at Tapovan in Chamoli district, a move officials say could mark a key step in the state's shift towards clean, renewable energy.
Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL) has appointed the Indian partner of Iceland-based geothermal specialist Verkis Consulting Engineers as consultant for the Tapovan project. The firm will carry out preliminary scientific assessments to establish the feasibility of geothermal power generation in the area.
Principal secretary (energy and alternative energy) R Meenakshi Sundaram said the consultant will prepare a preliminary project report that will form the basis for drilling, geological investigations and other technical studies required before the project advances to the next stage.
The state government notified the Uttarakhand Geothermal Energy Policy in 2025 to promote development of geothermal resources. Under the policy, the Tapovan project was allotted to UJVNL for exploration in June 2026.
UJVNL managing director Ajay Kumar Singh said studies to date indicate Tapovan could support a 1-megawatt pilot geothermal project, with potential to expand to a 10-megawatt commercial plant. He said UJVNL has constituted a high-level technical committee to oversee implementation and ensure scientific and technical coordination during exploration.
Congratulating the UJVNL and Energy Department teams, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the initiative reflects Uttarakhand's commitment to expanding clean energy through sustainable use of natural resources.
"The Tapovan geothermal project marks an important beginning for the state's energy sector. It will strengthen clean energy production, develop new renewable sources, and create opportunities for local employment and investment," Dhami said.
He added that, backed by the state's geothermal policy and a scientific approach, the project would bolster Uttarakhand's energy security and help establish the state as a national leader in geothermal development.
Officials said the project, once implemented, is expected to diversify the state's renewable energy portfolio - which currently depends predominantly on hydropower - and support long-term green energy goals.
The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), based in Dehradun, has identified more than 40 hot springs across Uttarakhand where geothermal energy could generate electricity. Of the 40 in Uttarakhand, 50% show electricity-generation potential; further studies are under way for the remaining sites in both states.
