State plans sensor-based warning system to curb man-animal conflict
Haldwani, Nov. 2 -- In a bid to prevent human-wildlife encounters and protect elephants, the Uttarakhand forest department is planning to install a modern Animal Intrusion Detection and Repellent (AIDR) system in the Tarai Central forest division, officials said on Sunday.
Pending final government approval, the solar-powered tech-driven warning mechanism will be set up across forest corridors and fringe villages identified as highly vulnerable to wildlife movement.
"The system will use motion and heat sensors to detect the presence of wild animals approaching residential areas, roads, and other vulnerable locations. Once an animal enters the designated detection zone, the sensors will trigger an alarm, siren, and bright lights to instantly alert forest officials and nearby residents," said Umesh Chandra Tiwari, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Tarai Central forest division.
"The combination of high-decibel sound and light is designed to deter animals from venturing into human settlements, encouraging them to retreat into the forest. Crucially, the early warning mechanism will give farmers and villagers sufficient time to take precautionary measures," Tiwari added.
According to forest officials, the proposed system is being evaluated as an efficient alternative to traditional physical fencing.
"A formal proposal for installing the AIDR system has been submitted to the state government. We expect to receive administrative approval soon, after which the installation process will commence across key corridors in the Terai division," the DFO said....
