Squirrel contact with high-voltage line blacks out city areas
LUCKNOW, April 6 -- A squirrel's brush with a high-voltage power line left part of Lucknow residents scrambling in dark on Sunday.
Heavy rainfall on Saturday had already caused intermittent outages across multiple neighbourhoods. But Sunday brought a more unusual culprit when a squirrel came into contact with a 33,000-volt current at OCR substation around 4 pm, triggering a fault in the transmission system.
Substation officials reported that the animal's contact with the high-voltage line disrupted electricity supply to several key zones: OCR, Hussain Ganj, Jawahar Bhavan, Indira Bhavan, and Dalibagh. While most affected areas recovered within five minutes, the OCR substation faced a prolonged blackout. Later that night, repeated tripping issues continued to plague the Jawahar Bhavan and Dalibagh substations.
"Authorities are now exploring measures to safeguard power infrastructure from such incidents, as both weather conditions and animal interference continue to pose challenges to uninterrupted electricity supply," said Ravi Agarwal, chief engineer Lucknow central. htc...
