LUCKNOW, Feb. 12 -- The Uttar Pradesh government in its budget for 2026-27 has proposed the establishment of sports colleges in 10 divisions of the state along with construction of a new building of Major Dhyan Chand State Sports University, Meerut, and also organising MP/MLA sports competitions. Also, for revamp of Green Park stadium in Kanpur, a budgetary allocation of Rs 45 crore has been made. This money will be used to further improve the infrastructure of the stadium to provide better facilities to the sportsperson. Currently, a total of 84 stadiums, 67 multipurpose sports halls, 38 swimming pools, and state-of-the-art gym equipment have been installed in 52 districts, said finance minister Suresh Khanna while presenting the budget on Wednesday. Additionally, 5 stadiums, 3 multipurpose sports halls, 2 synthetic hockey grounds, 1 hostel building, 3 sports colleges, 4 synthetic running tracks, 4 swimming pools, and 1 velodrome are under construction. An international cricket stadium is being constructed in Varanasi. Major Dhyan Chand State Sports University is being constructed in Meerut district. Under the Khelo India Yojana, the Sigra Stadium in Varanasi district is being extensively developed, a multipurpose sports hall is being constructed in Jaunpur district and a multipurpose sports hall is being constructed in Jaitpur, Rae Bareli. Approval has been granted for the construction of an international cricket stadium in Gorakhpur district on EPC mode.
