SP trans-Ganga distsecretary shot dead
PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 16 -- Samajwadi Party's trans-Ganga district secretary Pawan Kumar Yadav, 48, was shot dead in Handia area on Tuesday evening, around 200 metres from the police station, allegedly by a helmet-wearing assailant who fired at him from behind.
Yadav was rushed to a private hospital and later referred to SRN Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The assailant fled towards Varanasi on a motorcycle along with two accomplices, police said.
Yadav, a resident of Mugrawan village under Handia police station, had reached Karmnasha in Handia town in a car with his driver to meet a friend at his shop. After staying there for about an hour, he left for home at around 5.30pm.
As Yadav was opening the door of his car, the assailant approached him and shot him in the back from close range. The attacker then fled on a motorcycle with his two accomplices. The gunshot triggered panic in the area, following which local residents informed the police. Yadav was initially taken to a nearby private hospital before being referred to SRN hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Yadav was a former village head of Mugrawan and was currently a block development council (BDC) member from Kanakpur village.
CCTV footage from a camera installed near the crime scene captured images of the assailants. The shooter and one of his accomplices were seen wearing helmets, while the motorcycle rider's face was uncovered.
Handia station house officer Om Prakash Singh said, "The suspects are being identified with the help of CCTV footage and other evidence.
An FIR will be registered as soon as a formal complaint is received from the victim's family. Efforts to identify the assailants are already underway," he said....
