LUCKNOW, Sept. 27 -- Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday held a meeting with the party's spokespersons and laid down a clear set of dos and don'ts aimed at projecting a more disciplined and constructive public image, particularly regarding the alliance with the Congress. According to sources present at the meeting, Akhilesh emphasised that the alliance with the Congress was progressing smoothly and directed spokespersons to consistently highlight the alliance's strength, longevity and mutual merits. The instructions come against the backdrop of recent statements by leaders from both parties that raised doubts and caused embarrassment to both allies. The SP chief made it clear that seat-sharing and other key decisions would be taken solely by him in consultation with the Congress's top leadership. Spokespersons were told not to speculate or comment on these matters. Video-clips of TV debates featuring some SP panellists were shown on a projector screen and the shortcomings were discussed. Suggestions were also sought from the spokespersons. Akhilesh also issued specific guidelines for television debates. Spokespersons have been directed to avoid controversial topics, refrain from shouting, screaming or displaying aggression and instead maintain composure. They were further advised to thoroughly research subjects before appearing on news channels to ensure informed and measured interventions.
