SP MP's car damaged during stone-pelting in Sant Kabir Nagar
Gorakhpur, Sept. 20 -- The SUV of a Samajwadi Party MP was allegedly damaged in a stone-pelting incident during a Ganesh idol immersion procession in a village here, police said on Saturday.
The issue stemmed from a dispute over police action against a DJ vehicle during a Ganesh immersion procession which escalated into a confrontation late Friday night.
The incident occurred at the Ledua Mahua intersection in the Bakira police station area in Sant Kabir Nagar shortly after 10 pm, as over two dozen Ganesh idols gathered for collective immersion.
Tensions flared after a DJ operator reportedly fled the scene, abandoning his vehicle following a confrontation with the police.
According to officials, the dispute began when a police officer attempted to photograph a DJ system accompanying the procession.
Devotees, already on edge due to recent reports of DJs being issued challans, feared further police action, which triggered protests and a blockade of the procession route.
A large contingent of police, accompanied by the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) and the circle officer (CO), arrived to pacify the crowd and facilitate the immersion. During this standoff, the vehicle belonging to SP MP Laxmikant arrived at the scene. Police reports indicate that the car was surrounded by individuals who threw stones, shattering its glass. The incident sparked a clash between the MP's supporters and the protesters, further heightening tension in the area.
The district administration subsequently deployed additional police personnel to control the situation and prevent the spread of rumors.
Sant Kabir Nagar superintendent of police (SP) Sandeep Kumar Meena confirmed that the immersion was completed under heavy security and that the MP was able to leave the site safely despite the damage to his vehicle. He added that police are currently patrolling the area and the situation remains under control. The MP later visited the Bakira police station with his supporters to lodge a formal complaint and demand action against those responsible. SP Meena stated that the individuals involved in the attack are being identified for further legal action....
