PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 14 -- Three days after being shifted to police lines over alleged negligence in a timber theft case, the then station officer (SO) of Fatanpur police station, Manish Kumar Tripathi, and sub-inspector (SI) Santosh Verma have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act and suspended from service. The case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Geeta Sharma, the General Diary (GD) clerk posted at Fatanpur police station. The FIR alleges that the two police officers failed to take appropriate action in a case involving the theft and sale of timber loaded on a truck and subsequently released the vehicle after allegedly accepting a bribe. According to police sources, superintendent of police (SP) Deepak Bhukar had on Tuesday transferred SO Manish Kumar Tripathi and SI Santosh Verma to police lines over delays in registering an FIR and alleged lapses in the investigation. The matter was later probed by Raniganj Circle Officer (CO) Prashant Raj Hooda. Based on the findings of the inquiry, a corruption case was registered against the two officers.
