Snatcher opens fire on cops, shot in leg during encounter in Lko
Lucknow, March 24 -- A late-night police chase in the PGI area ended after a wanted snatcher allegedly opened fire at a police team and was shot in the leg before being arrested, officials said on Monday. The accused, identified as Arjun Rawat alias Gangadhar, 25, is alleged to have snatched a mobile phone from a woman hours before the encounter. Police said he was intercepted near a culvert in Vrindavan Yojana following a tip-off.
"When the police team tried to stop him, he fired at them. In retaliatory action, he sustained a bullet injury in his leg and was arrested," said deputy commissioner of police (South) Nipun Agarwal.
The arrest led to the recovery of the snatched mobile phone, an unnumbered motorcycle used in the crime, and an illegal .315 bore country-made pistol with cartridges.
The case relates to a complaint filed by a woman on March 23, who alleged that a bike-borne snatcher fled with her phone late at night. The video of the incident had also gone viral on social media.
"During questioning, the accused confessed to targeting pedestrians in isolated areas to fund a lifestyle driven by 'show-off and luxury'," said additional DCP Vasanth Rallapalli.
The DCP said that Rawat has a long criminal history, with multiple cases of theft, burglary, and even charges under the Gangster Act registered against him in Lucknow.
Police said further investigation is underway, and efforts are on to identify any accomplices involved in similar crimes....
