MEERUT, Aug. 5 -- The Saharanpur Municipal Corporation, through its GIS-based property assessment system, served notices to SP leader Farhad Alam Gada seeking over Rs.22 crore in house tax and nearly Rs.12 crore in water tax for his residential property. Calling the assessment "completely irrational", Gada said he would challenge the notices in court, while municipal commissioner ordered an inquiry into a possible error in GIS survey. Gada said that his 816-square-yard house is located in a village that falls within the municipal corporation's jurisdiction. The property is worth around Rs.4 crore, making the nearly Rs.34-crore tax demand "beyond comprehension." Gada said there was no basis for levying over Rs.22 crore in annual house tax on his Rs.4-crore home. He disputed the nearly Rs.12-crore water tax, claiming corporation's water supply has not even reached his residence. Gada said he would move court, seeking clarity on the basis of the tax assessment and the name in which the notice was issued.
