SKM to expand land rights movement across state
Lucknow, Oct. 23 -- The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has decided to expand the Land Rights Movement across Uttar Pradesh through district-level conventions.
In a conference on Thursday, a resolution was passed supporting the SKM's proposed agitation on October 23, demanding the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the removal of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
More than 200 delegates and guests attended the conference. Participants also passed resolutions supporting the SKM's proposed agitations on electoral revision, a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP), electricity and seed legislation, and the India-US free trade agreement.
The conference was inaugurated by Hannan Mollah, vice-president of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and an eight-time former MP. Mollah, who was among the founders of the SKM, traced the origins of the Land Rights Movement to 2014.
He said the initiative was launched after the Narendra Modi government introduced an ordinance to amend the land acquisition law soon after coming to power in 2014.
He said the proposed changes prompted farmer organisations and other groups to coordinate their opposition under the banner of the Land Rights Movement.
Presenting the proposal for the movement's future programmes, regional general secretary Mukut Singh called for organising district conventions across Uttar Pradesh and observing Land Rights Day in December.
The date for the proposed observance will be finalised and announced later.
The conference was presided over by a panel comprising Mukut Singh, Imtiaz Beg, Suresh Rathore and Lal Prakash Rahi. Former MLA Rajendra Yadav welcomed the delegates and guests, while Arvind Murti moved a resolution.
Twenty-three speakers addressed the gathering, and P Krishna Prasad delivered the concluding address. The conference ended with a vote of thanks by Mukut Singh....
