Lakhimpur Kheri, July 19 -- The skeletal remains of a 35-year-old man, identified as Anil Kumar of Tulmel Ganj, were recovered from a sugarcane field in Jhaupur village on Saturday morning. The victim, who was identified by the clothing found at the scene, had been reported missing since Thursday, when he went to the Jhaupur market to purchase vegetables. He is survived by his elderly mother and a five-year-old daughter. The victim's skeletal remains were found near the Maheshpur range forests, which falls under the south Kheri forest division. DFO Tapas Mihir inspected the site and conducted preliminary investigations. He told Hindustan Times that "pugmarks of a tiger, a hyena and foxes were detected near the spot, which prima facie indicate an attack by the big cat, with the remains subsequently scavenged." However, the DFO added that the exact cause of death will be confirmed following a postmortem examination. Following the recovery, a team including Hyderabad police station in-charge Sunil Malik, forester Rohit Kumar and personnel from the Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) arrived at the scene.
