SIT formed to investigate Atiq Ahmed's alleged benami properties
PRAYAGRAJ, June 24 -- The police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe properties allegedly acquired through benami transactions by slain mafia don Atiq Ahmed and his associates.
This action follows a complaint by advocate KP Srivastava, who alleged that Ahmed and his family members purchased several properties in the Dhoomanganj police station area under the name of Madan Lal Bhartiya, a resident of Chakiya.
In response, additional police commissioner (law and order) Ajay Pal Sharma has ordered an inquiry into these assets and directed that appropriate legal action be taken if irregularities are identified.
The SIT comprises deputy commissioner of police (City) Manish Kumar Shandilya, ADM (City) Satyam Mishra, additional municipal commissioner Arvind Rai, AIG (Stamps) Rakesh Chandra, and Prayagraj development authority (PDA) secretary Vineet Kumar Singh.
Under the order, the team is tasked with collecting confidential and authenticated information regarding the properties, scrutinising records, and determining if the assets were acquired illegally. If evidence of unlawful acquisition emerges, the SIT is instructed to initiate legal proceedings.
The team must begin its investigation within three days and is required to submit a joint weekly progress report to the additional police commissioner every Monday.
