Dehradun, July 29 -- The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Chamoli police probing the alleged theft of donations from the counting room at Badrinath Dham will focus on recovering the allegedly stolen cash and valuables from accused Pramod Nautiyal during his four-day police custody and ascertain whether others were involved in the offence, police said on Tuesday. Nautiyal, personal assistant to the chairman of the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), was responsible for coordinating VIP protocol and supervising donation counting at the Badrinath temple. Investigators are also examining funds collected through VIP darshan as part of the probe. Badrinath station house officer (SHO) Mahadev Uniyal said, "We secured the accused's custody on Tuesday following a court order passed on Monday. We will try to recover the stolen cash and other items and question him further to ascertain whether any other persons were involved in the offence." Police are yet to recover the allegedly stolen cash, gold and silver coins. So far, only a Shaligram stone has been recovered from Nautiyal's possession. Uniyal said the SIT was also probing funds collected through VIP darshan. "We have sought the relevant records from the BKTC," he said. On Monday, a Chamoli court granted the police four-day custody of Nautiyal. Officials said the SIT was also examining the bank accounts, financial transactions and immovable properties of the two arrested accused to determine whether they had amassed assets disproportionate to their known sources of income or were involved in suspicious financial transactions linked to the alleged theft. The case is being investigated on multiple fronts. A four-member internal committee constituted by the BKTC has submitted its preliminary report to the committee chairman. Separately, the police SIT is conducting the criminal investigation, while a high-level committee set up by the Uttarakhand government is carrying out an independent inquiry. The alleged theft came to light after the Hindu right-wing outfit Bhairav Sena Sangathan submitted a memorandum to the BKTC chief executive officer on July 2, seeking administrative action and registration of an FIR over alleged financial irregularities involving the BKTC chairman's personal assistant.
