LUCKNOW, June 25 -- More than three weeks after a fire safety audit was launched across Lucknow following a deadly blaze in Delhi, around 120 of the 150 hotels, restaurants and other commercial establishments served notices are yet to initiate compliance measures, according to fire department officials. The disclosure comes days after the Aliganj fire tragedy claimed 15 lives, raising fresh questions about enforcement of safety norms. Following a June 3 fire in Delhi's Hauz Rani area that killed 21 people, the Uttar Pradesh government intensified inspections from June 4 on the directions of chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Fire department teams inspected hotels, restaurants, banquet halls and other commercial establishments, checking fire No Objection Certificates (NOCs), emergency exits, escape routes and firefighting systems. More than 150 hotels and eateries in the state capital were issued notices for deficiencies ranging from the absence of fire NOCs to blocked escape routes, inadequate emergency exits and shortcomings in firefighting infrastructure, officials told HT. "Around 20% of the establishments that received notices have approached the department to begin compliance measures or seek the required clearances. The remaining 120 establishments continue to operate despite being flagged during the inspection campaign," officials said. Senior officers personally monitored the exercise.
