VARANASI, Sept. 17 -- A sub-inspector was allegedly assaulted by a group of lawyers within the Varanasi court premises on Tuesday, police said. The incident occurred when the officer, accompanied by a constable, had gone to the court to obtain a remand slip related to a case. According to police officials, sub-inspector (SI) Mithilesh Prajapati, posted at Baragaon police station in Varanasi district, sustained serious injuries in the attack and has been admitted to the Trauma Centre at BHU, where he is being treated. Additional commissioner of police (law and order), Shivhari Meena, confirmed the incident and said, "Sub-inspector Mithilesh Prajapati was assaulted by a few lawyers when he visited the court to collect a remand slip. Following the incident, senior police officers rushed to the spot and held a meeting with office-bearers of the bar association. The association condemned the attack and assured full cooperation in the legal proceedings. CCTV footage is being reviewed to identify the culprits, and strict action will be taken against those involved." The altercation is reportedly linked to a land dispute between two individuals from Puari Khurd under Baragaon police station.
