Shop owner dies by suicide, widow alleges extortion; 6 booked
LUCKNOW, July 10 -- A 34-year-old trader's wife has accused six men of driving her husband to suicide through sustained extortion, assault and harassment over unpaid loans, following which the Naka police registered an FIR under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The FIR was lodged on Wednesday on the complaint of deceased's wife, a resident of Fatehganj under the Naka police stations, a day after body of her husband was found hanging at their home. The case names Rishi Sonkar, Amit Sonkar, Ranjeet and three unidentified persons as accused.
The woman alleged that her husband ran a paan kiosk outside Fatehganj market, where Rishi Sonkar allegedly collected Rs.500 every day as "hafta". She claimed that whenever her husband failed to make the payment, he was abused and assaulted by the accused.
She further alleged that her husband's business had been running into losses, making it difficult for him to pay both the daily extortion money and the interest on loans he had borrowed from the accused. According to the complaint, Rishi Sonkar, Amit Sonkar, Ranjeet and others repeatedly threatened and assaulted him over the unpaid interest.
About a week before his death, the family withdrew Rs.15,000 from their bank account to repay part of the interest, but the harassment allegedly continued.
The complainant alleged that on July 7, when the man went to open his shop, the accused again demanded money, assaulted him and forced him to shut the shop and leave. Unable to bear the repeated humiliation, he returned home and died by suicide later that day, she claimed.
"My husband did not commit suicide on his own. He was driven to end his life because of the constant harassment, assault and humiliation by these people," stated complainant while seeking strict legal action against the accused.
"Police have registered the FIR under Section 108 of the BNS," said SHO Vivek Chudhary....
